Mary Craig in Montecito

Here was a nearly untouched, perfect Spanish Colonial Revival, designed in the 1920s by one of the best architects of the period, Mary Craig. The owners wanted to preserve as much as possible and only make those few alterations, which are almost mandatory by today’s standards: 1) enlarge the servants’ kitchen and add an adjacent family room, and (2) expand the master bathroom and closet. All the additions were made as closely as possible to the spirit of the original with the goal, which you would have to be an architectural historian to tell the difference. One exception here was the master bath, where the owner wanted to duplicate a page out of the Waterworks catalog, but even it seems to look like something Mary Craig might have done – if Waterworks wasn’t so pricey.
